Some months ago I was playing around with ORACLE Virtual Box for one of my works. The work was a server installation for a first virtualization evaluation: the interested company decided to try virtualization in an unobtrusive way, starting smoothly, using an existing os installation.

One of the problems I faced in this small work was to allow the customization of VirtualBox's VM screen resolution. By default, in fact, VirtualBox VMs fix their screen resolution to be the same of the hosting machine. Because I had the need to support for remote connection of users to VM, using both RDP and VNC, I was also questioned about the possibility of changing the screen resolution of VMs to enable custom resolutions.

Fortunatly, VirtualBox has support for such a task, it is sufficient to set a configuration parameter through the VBoxManage tool. In particular the command to send on a shell is:

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any

After issuing such command, the VMs' screen resolution can be adjusted using VMs' operating systems tools.
